Trump hints at halting Iran talks; US steps up economic pressure

Washington: US President Donald Trump has reportedly instructed his top negotiating team to temporarily suspend talks with Iran, amid growing tensions between the two countries.

The move comes despite indications of recent “positive discussions” between Washington and Tehran. Trump is reportedly frustrated by Iran’s reluctance to accept his demands and wants to see a renewed willingness from Tehran before negotiations resume.

Instead of launching further military strikes, the US is now moving towards increasing economic pressure on Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would take tough measures targeting Iranian bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets and overseas assets.

Trump also said there were “no talks or conversations with Iran”, signalling uncertainty over the future of diplomatic engagement.

Iran denies UAE missile allegations

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has denied the UAE’s allegation that Iran launched two ballistic missiles towards the country.

The UAE said no casualties or significant damage were reported, but warned that regional tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, remain high.

Amid the escalation, the UAE announced that it would suspend trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice.
