5 workers killed as crane collapses at brick unit near Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Five workers were killed and 12 others injured after a crane collapsed at a cement brick unit in Mahalingapuram in Shankarpalli mandal of Rangareddy district on Monday evening.

According to officials, the crane, which was being used to lift cement bricks, toppled due to strong winds while 17 workers were present at the site. Five workers died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. The condition of two of them is reported to be critical.

The deceased have been identified as Ali Hussain (35), Nagender (30), Sajid (32), Mithun and Sonu. Their bodies have been shifted to the Chevella Government Hospital for postmortem.

Police and emergency teams reached the spot soon after the incident and carried out rescue operations. The injured are undergoing treatment at Shankarpalli hospital.

A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, officials said.
