Tokyo: A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan on Thursday morning, injuring at least four people and triggering strong tremors across several prefectures.
The quake occurred at a depth of about 40 km off the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture. Initially measured at 6.9, its magnitude was later revised to 7.2. Tremors were felt in parts of Aomori, Hokkaido, Akita, Miyagi, Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures.
Authorities said no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. Officials also confirmed that no abnormalities were detected at nuclear power plants in Aomori, Miyagi and Fukushima.
Residents have been advised to remain alert as aftershocks could occur in the coming days.
Meanwhile, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela near the capital, Caracas. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first measured 7.1 in magnitude, followed by a 7.5-magnitude quake about a minute later.
The earthquakes caused significant damage in the Moron region and surrounding areas. Emergency teams have been deployed to assess the destruction and assist affected residents.
Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency following the disaster, while authorities continued rescue and relief operations in the affected regions.
