Bengaluru to upgrade 1,500km roads, redevelop 17km Outer Ring Road
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday reviewed Bengaluru’s infrastructure priorities and future development plans at a meeting with the city’s MLAs and MLCs, outlining a major expansion of road, Metro, bus and suburban rail networks.
The proposed infrastructure push includes 40 km of tunnel corridors, 120 km of elevated corridors and 500 km of new road connections. The government also plans to upgrade 1,500 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads, redevelop the 17-km Outer Ring Road and take up a proposed 37-km double-decker road.

Shivakumar said Bengaluru’s Metro network would be expanded from 96 km to 170 km by 2027. The plans also include adding 4,500 buses and developing 150 km of suburban rail connectivity by 2030.
The government is also prioritising additional Cauvery water supply, phased infrastructure upgrades in 65 urbanised gram panchayats outside Greater Bengaluru Authority limits and improvements to waste management.
A 10-year development roadmap is being planned ahead of Bengaluru’s 500th anniversary in 2037, with an estimated investment of ₹1 lakh crore.
Shivakumar said the government would focus on balanced development across all constituencies, ensuring adequate funding and timely execution of priority projects.
The proposed measures are aimed at improving connectivity, civic infrastructure and public transport as Bengaluru prepares for its long-term development needs.
