New Delhi: Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reviewed the progress of key health-sector initiatives announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, stressing time-bound implementation and measurable outcomes.

The first phase of a plan to increase emergency and trauma-care capacity by 50% will cover 160 of 613 identified district hospitals, with the work targeted for completion by March 2027. A total of 613 hospitals have been divided into three phases.

The government is also working to add 1 lakh Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) over five years across 10 disciplines. Training has already begun under a separate initiative to develop 1.5 lakh multiskilled caregivers during the coming year.

Focus on research, mental health and medical tourism

Nadda reviewed Biopharma SHAKTI, which aims to establish more than 1,000 accredited clinical-trial sites, and the proposal for five Regional Medical Hubs to strengthen medical value tourism.

The meeting also examined plans to strengthen the CDSCO with specialist scientific staff and improve drug-approval capacity.

For mental healthcare, the proposed NIMHANS-II is planned with 1,000 beds. NIMHANS Bengaluru will mentor the Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, and LGBRIMH, Tezpur.

Nadda directed officials to ensure close monitoring, inter-ministerial coordination and visible progress on the ground.
