New Delhi: Political activity within the Indian National Congress intensified on Monday amid speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka and reports that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may step down soon.
Sources said Siddaramaiah is likely to meet Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on May 28 and may submit his resignation. A cabinet meeting is expected to be held before any formal announcement.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders K. C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala are set to arrive in Bengaluru to closely monitor the political developments. A meeting of the Congress Legislature Party is also likely to be convened.
According to party sources, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar remains the leading contender for the chief minister’s post if a leadership transition takes place.
However, the Congress high command is also believed to be exploring the possibility of projecting a new face ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.
Among the alternative names being discussed prominently are ministers Krishna Byre Gowda and G. Parameshwara.
