El Nino Could Deal Severe Blow to Global Economy, UN Warns
United Nations: The United Nations has warned that the El Nino weather phenomenon could deliver a severe shock to the global economy, threatening parts of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific with extreme heat, droughts and floods.
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) chief Celeste Saulo said El Nino was expected to peak later this year, with its effects potentially extending beyond the end of the year.
In Southeast Asia, below-normal rainfall combined with rising temperatures could intensify pressure on agriculture, water resources and food security. The region also faces concerns over wildfires and smoke-related hazards, adding to the potential risks for communities and livelihoods.

Tom Fletcher of the United Nations stressed the urgency of preparations, saying the next two weeks would be critical in preventing or reducing potential damage. He called on governments, civil society organisations and businesses to coordinate their efforts and strengthen disaster preparedness.
The warning highlights the need for timely action to mitigate the potential economic and humanitarian consequences of extreme weather, particularly in regions vulnerable to heat, water shortages and flooding.
