Chennai: Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday as a weak low-pressure circulation persists over Tamil Nadu’s coastal belt, the Regional Meteorological Centre said.

Moderate showers are also expected at isolated places in Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul and Theni. Thunder and lightning may accompany the rain in some areas.

Residents have been advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid sheltering under trees or near weak structures.

In Chennai and suburbs, partly cloudy skies are expected, with moderate rain and thunderstorms possible during the evening or night. Sudden downpours could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect traffic.

Meanwhile, interior Tamil Nadu is likely to experience hotter conditions, with maximum temperatures forecast to remain up to 4°C above normal over the next four days. People have been advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

South Bengal to receive more rain

Kolkata: Heavy rain is expected to continue in parts of south Bengal for the next 24 hours as a low-pressure area moves towards Jharkhand and Bihar.

The system, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, was located north of Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday and was moving west-northwest at around 10 kmph.

The system was about 100 km from Ranchi, 160 km southeast of Gaya and 210 km east of Daltonganj. Thunderstorms are likely across south Bengal as the system gradually moves towards Bihar.
