Bengaluru: In a breathtaking display of courage and coordination, India etched its name in history as the country’s largest tricolour was unfurled underwater at Swaraj Dweep, earning a coveted spot in the Guinness World Records. Bengaluru-based adventure sports professional Sharath R. Ashok was among the key participants in this landmark achievement.
The operation, carried out on May 2, saw more than 200 trained scuba divers from across the country come together for the ambitious mission. Supported by the Andaman & Nicobar administration and Indian defence forces, the team successfully unfurled a massive 60×40 metre national flag beneath the sea, battling strong currents and intense underwater pressure.
Recognising the extraordinary feat, Lieutenant Governor D.K. Joshi formally presented the team with the Guinness World Records certificate.
Sharath, who has over a decade of experience in adventure sports, brought his extensive expertise to the mission. A certified dive master and scuba instructor, he is also trained in paragliding, paramotoring, motocross, and mountaineering—skills that proved crucial in executing the challenging underwater operation.
Speaking about the achievement, Sharath said, “The Indian tricolour represents the unity and strength of 1.4 billion people. Being part of this mission and unfurling it deep in the ocean is a proud and unforgettable moment.”
Sharath, son of Karnataka Leader of Opposition R. Ashok, has emerged as an inspiration for youth, showcasing how passion, discipline, and skill can lead to global recognition.
