Tehran: Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after Iran announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. In response, the United States launched airstrikes targeting key Iranian military installations.
According to US officials, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intercepted and attacked the Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel MV GFS Galaxy in the Gulf. The attack reportedly damaged the ship’s engine room, and one crew member remains missing.
Iran declared that no commercial vessels would be allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz as long as US military operations continue in the region. The move has raised concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies and international maritime trade.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it has begun the third phase of its military operations against Iran, stating that the strikes are aimed at safeguarding international shipping lanes and regional security.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions are continuing through Qatari mediation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has fulfilled its obligations under previous agreements and called on the United States to honour its commitments as negotiations continue.
