Mangaluru: In a major infrastructure push for the world-famous Mangaluru Dasara, the Karnataka government has approved a ₹67 crore project to shift overhead power lines underground along the procession route, addressing a long-pending safety and logistical concern.
The move follows sustained efforts by local authorities associated with Kudroli Sri Gokarnath Temple, which organises the grand Dasara celebrations. Every year, overhead power lines posed a significant challenge for tall idols and chariots during the procession, often forcing temporary power shutdowns across parts of the city and inconveniencing residents and businesses.
The proposal was taken up with the government through Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U. T. Khader Farid, who played a key role in pushing the project forward. Officials said the Speaker treated the issue as one concerning public safety and the city’s cultural identity, and coordinated with the energy department to secure approvals.
Padmaraj R. Poojary, a representative of the constituency, said the project would ensure smooth conduct of the procession without risks from overhead lines. He added that the tender process has been completed and work is expected to begin shortly.
The project has received support from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Energy Minister K. J. George and district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, among others.
Officials said the underground cabling will not only enhance safety during the festival but also reduce power disruptions during the monsoon and improve the city’s overall aesthetics by eliminating overhead wires.
