Victoria (Seychelles): Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles on Sunday, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. Speaking during Seychelles’ 50th Independence anniversary celebrations, he described the island nation as a valued maritime neighbour and a key partner in India’s vision for the Indian Ocean.

Modi said the relationship between India and Seychelles is rooted in centuries-old people-to-people ties and shared values. He congratulated the people of Seychelles on their Golden Jubilee and praised the country’s unity, cultural diversity and democratic traditions.

Emphasising maritime cooperation, the Prime Minister said India and Seychelles share a common commitment to security, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region. He highlighted collaboration in defence, coast guard training, maritime security and capacity building under India’s MAHASAGAR vision.

Modi also lauded Seychelles’ leadership in the Blue Economy and environmental conservation, calling for greater cooperation in fisheries, marine science, renewable energy and sustainable tourism.

On climate change, he stressed the need for climate justice and reaffirmed India’s support for Small Island Developing States. He highlighted initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE.

The Prime Minister also underscored cooperation in education, skill development and digital transformation, offering to share India’s Digital Public Infrastructure experience with Seychelles.

Concluding his address, Modi said India would remain a trusted partner of Seychelles and expressed confidence that the strongest chapters of the bilateral relationship are yet to come.
