News Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with India’s Asian Games 2026 contingent, congratulating athletes, coaches, support staff and their families for bringing pride to the country.

Modi said the athletes had enhanced the honour of the Tricolour and described their achievements as a collective national success. He highlighted India’s 85-medal tally, including performances in hockey, cricket, kabaddi, archery, shooting, boxing, wrestling and athletics.

The Prime Minister particularly praised the men’s and women’s hockey teams for winning gold medals, noting that the women’s team had ended a 44-year wait. He also highlighted the contribution of women athletes, who won 38 medals, including 11 golds.

Modi attributed India’s progress to efforts over the past decade to strengthen its sporting ecosystem through initiatives such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India.

He said more than ₹36,000 crore had been allocated to expand Khelo India and strengthen sports federations. He also highlighted investments in sports infrastructure, grassroots competitions, athlete support and international coaching opportunities.

Calling for greater focus on young talent, Modi urged medal winners to visit schools and their hometowns to inspire children aspiring to pursue sports.

He said discipline, perseverance and resilience developed through sports helped individuals throughout their lives.

Looking ahead, Modi referred to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, India’s planned hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.

He called on athletes to set new records and help establish India among the world’s leading sporting nations, expressing confidence that the country could emerge as a global sporting powerhouse.
