NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that “vote chori” (vote theft) was a crime against the people of India and a direct attack on the Constitution.
In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that the BJP, RSS and the Election Commission were involved in what he described as “vote chori”. He further alleged that those behind the alleged exercise had committed an act of “treason”.
“Vote chori is a crime against the people of India and a direct attack on our Constitution,” Gandhi said, adding that those responsible would eventually face justice.
His remarks came amid reports of differences within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to the reports, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over decisions concerning electoral rolls during the past 10 months.
The reported objections related to several issues, including deletion and restoration of voters’ names, enrolment of new voters, appeals concerning electoral rolls and management of voter data.
Concerns were also reportedly raised over changes to Form 6, which is used for voter registration, as well as measures relating to the centralisation of electoral-roll data.
EC says decisions taken unanimously
The Election Commission, however, has rejected the suggestion of any division in its decision-making, saying that all decisions, including those relating to SIR, were taken unanimously.
“Every decision of the Election Commission of India, including SIR, has been taken unanimously with the approval of the Chief Election Commissioner and the two Election Commissioners,” officials said.

EC sources said members of the commission may express their individual views or objections on any issue. However, the final decisions of the commission are taken unanimously, they said.
