TN cancels police leave ahead of May 4 vote counting
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu police have cancelled leave for all personnel from May 2 until further orders to ensure tight security during the counting of votes for the assembly elections on May 4.
The directive, issued by the state Director General of Police, applies to all ranks—from constables to senior officers—and is aimed at maximising deployment to maintain law and order across the state.
Officials said security arrangements at counting centres are being significantly strengthened, with additional forces to be deployed in sensitive and vulnerable areas.
As per the order, no fresh leave will be granted during this period. However, exemptions have been allowed for personnel already on leave due to unavoidable reasons such as medical emergencies, maternity leave, childcare responsibilities or educational commitments.
The move is part of a broader strategy by the administration to ensure peaceful and smooth counting of votes, with heightened vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents following the announcement of results.
