New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Paying homage to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.”
Kharge, meanwhile, remembered Nehru as the architect of modern India and praised his contribution towards strengthening democracy, scientific temper, industrial growth and economic self-reliance.

Quoting Nehru, Kharge said, “The defense of the nation, the progress of the nation, the unity of the nation—these are our national duty. We may follow different religions, live in different provinces, speak different languages, but no wall should arise between us because of that.”
He also highlighted Nehru’s vision of equality and inclusive growth, stating that India should not become a nation where “some people are very rich and most people are poor.”
Calling Nehru a visionary leader, Kharge said his commitment to institution-building and progressive governance gave India a distinct identity on the global stage.
“The vision of 21st century India remains incomplete without the invaluable contributions of Pandit Nehru ji,” the Congress president said.
