New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday evening removed Opposition leaders and workers protesting near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence over the alleged NEET question paper leak and the police action against student protesters. Several leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were detained during the operation.
Leaders of the Congress and other parties in the INDIA bloc had announced that they would continue their sit-in protest through the night. However, police moved in during the evening and cleared the protest site.
According to eyewitnesses, Rahul Gandhi, who was sitting on the road along with other protesters, refused to leave, insisting that the demonstration would continue until their demands were addressed. He was later escorted by police personnel to a waiting bus along with other detained leaders.
There were also brief scuffles between Congress workers and police during the clearance operation, though the situation was brought under control.
The Congress condemned the police action, alleging that the Centre was using undemocratic methods to suppress the voices of students and the Opposition. The party reiterated its demand for accountability over the alleged NEET examination irregularities and criticised the government’s handling of the protests.
